Excerpts from the Journal of Pontormo
May , 1555
On Wednesday May 1st,
I had 12 ounces of bread for dinner,
Half a little head, cheese and beans.
On Thursday I had the other half for dinner.
Friday night I had dinner with Piero,
we ate one pesce d’uovo, salad, dry figs:
the night of the Holy Cross.
On Saturday one pesce d’uovo with
Swiss chard juice, sugar, and Swiss
chard soup, and 10 ounces of bread.
On Sunday I had two eggs for dinner.
On Monday a fried lamb liver.
Tuesday night I had a lamb’s heart
for dinner,
boiled dried meat, and 10 ounces of bread,
and I started the arm of the figure that is like this:
-on Wednesday Tasso died-
and I finished the figure,
and at night I went to have dinner with Daniello,
we ate roasted kid and fish.
July, 1555
July first, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,
Saturday: I did not have dinner at night; I drew.
The fifth, Sunday: I had lunch with
Bronzino and it was
that morning when I found him
in Santa Maria del Fiore, where he was with
Ottaviano and
he spoke to mister
Lorenzo Pucci, while I went to buy
the pratese lettuce;
and at night I had dinner at his place,
that was when I sent Piero
to buy 9 soldi wine.

On the aforementioned twentieth: in the morning
I received a grain vessel;
At night I
washed my feet and kicked the door,
so hard that I
hurt myself and I am still hurting today, that is,
on the 25th.
